  1. What kinds of reasons are offered for fabricating data? Which, if any, of those reasons are good reasons--i.e., reasons that might justify fabricating data?

- Deadlines, being pressed for time, extreme pressure, trying to get a higher status in your job, or possibly even getting a role on the board of the school

- None of them are good reasons.

  1. Who is likely to be harmed by fabricating data? Does actual harm have to occur in order for fabrication to be ethically wrong?

- Researchers, co-workers, the public, the corporation you work for, affiliants, everyone

- No, it’s wrong even if nobody uses the research because it’s still lying.

  1. What responsibilities does a scientist have for checking on the trustworthiness of the work of other scientists?

- Other scientists might use the fabricated data, which may lead to unintentional fabrication.

  1. What should a scientist do if he or she has reason to believe that another scientist has fabricated data?

- Investigate, then tell a higher authority, watch them closely

  1. Why is honesty in scientific research important to the scientific community? Why is honesty in scientific research important for the public?

- It’s important, so everyone’s data doesn’t get corrupted

- They need it to be true for their health

  1. 1. I agree that there is no valid reason for fabricating data, even if one is running out of time or does not favor the results.

    3. Scientists do need to make sure they check over themselves and one another. This ensures that the data is accurate.

    Good job! :)

  2. I agree that fabricating studies is VERY harmful to the public too. I think that it could even cause someone to get sick or even die.

  3. fabricating data is also illegal. And if u fabricate data and turn it in and someone else uses it, they are included in the fabrication.

  5. They could have fabricated data because their results didn't prove their point, or because the results didn't turn out the way they wanted to -- still, its illegal.

  6. I agree that even though the information may not be used, it is still illegal to pick and choose what to present.

  7. I agree that fabricating data is wrong because the public will actually believe it and trust the scientists that just made up their results

  8. I agree, making up false data is not right becuase people will believe "scientific fact" when in actuality it is false.
